What Are Hair Fibers and How Do They Work?
A straightforward guide to cosmetic hair-building fibers, who they suit, and what results to expect.
Hair-building fibers are a cosmetic styling product designed to reduce the appearance of visible scalp in areas where hair is thinning. Fine colored fibers settle around existing strands, making those areas look denser without changing the hair follicle itself.
Products may use keratin, cotton/cellulose, rayon or other fiber materials. Research examining some keratin products describes electrostatic attraction between the fibers and existing hair shafts as part of the adhesion mechanism.
Hair fibers work best when there is still existing hair for the fibers to attach to. That makes crown thinning, wider parts and diffuse thinning better use cases than a completely smooth bald area.
Application is simple: dry and style your hair, shake a small amount over the thinning area, gently pat or blend, and add more only where needed. The goal is believable density, not maximum coverage.
Hair fibers are cosmetic. They do not regrow hair and should not be marketed as a treatment for hair loss.
